CBD & Sexual Wellness

CBD and sexual wellness is the next big thing

It seems a world away when oil was all that came to mind when we thought about CBD products. Since its first appearance in the mainstream, the category now includes everything from CBD skincare, haircare, drinks and even pet food. Now a new category is emerging, the CBD and sexual wellness category.

At first glance, the connection between CBD and sex may not seem an obvious one but when we think of some of the problems experienced in the bedroom and what they generally tend to be caused by; anxiety and stress, lack of libido or pain, the link isn’t so surprising after all.

Sexual Anxiety

CBD helps to boost Anandamide which acts as the body’s ‘bliss molecule’ and is said to act as a natural depressant. It’s also associated with Oxytocin which is known as the ‘cuddle hormone’ and plays an important role in interpersonal bonding.

Anandamide is so important because it forms part of our Endocannabinoid System (ECS) which regulates the body’s homeostasis balance, or state of equilibrium and impacts everything from our mood, sleep, appetite, pain, stress regulation, and nervous and immune systems.

Think about all the issues caused by painful sex and then consider that CBD can help to reduce anxiety, pain and inflammation as well as interacting with the Serotonin system, which is an important regulator of libido and sex drive.

For example, stress and anxiety over sexual performance has got to be one of the biggest issues in the bedroom and inevitably affects both partners enjoyment of sex, which in turn causes even more anxiety.

So taking CBD before getting between the sheets could help to lighten the mood and increase calm and relaxation whilst helping to manage feelings of nervousness.

Likewise, it’s no secret that many women suffer from pain both during and after sex and we already know that CBD can help to relieve pain and inflammation, which is again tied into the way it works with the endocannabinoid system.

Lubricants are already designed to improve blood flow and stimulate natural lubrication. Add CBD to the mix with its ability to increase blood flow to tissues and improve nerve sensation as well as creating a sense of ease and calm and we can see why the CBD sexual wellness category is gaining traction.

Reduced pain and enhanced sexual drive = less stress in the bedroom and more enjoyable sex. So far so good but it’s important to remember that whilst CBD as a sexual wellness aide is definitely causing a stir, it’s still very much a nascent category and research is still in its infancy.

That said, the research that we do have is promising. For example, a 2019 review paper showed cannabis led to longer, more satisfying orgasms.

And a 2020 survey conducted by Remedy Review amongst 5,398 Americans found that 9.3% of the respondents had taken CBD for sex, and a majority noticed a positive difference in their sex lives.

Those who were surveyed were broken down as follows: 54% were men and 46% were women; 80% of respondents described themselves as straight, 16% as bisexual, and 3% as gay.

The key findings amongst those who had used CBD for sex were:

  • 72% of men and 76% of women said they experienced stronger orgasms
  • 66% of both men and women use CBD to alleviate sexual anxiety
  • Men lasted 31% longer before orgasm
  • Women reported being 33% faster to orgasm
  • 57% report being “more satisfied” with their relationship
  • 87% of men and women took CBD as a couple
  • 69% are likely to continue to use CBD for sex

Diana Urman, a certified sex educator with a practice in San Francisco, believes that CBD can help reduce sexual anxiety. In a 2018 interview with HuffPost, Urman said, “Many people say they feel more spontaneous and adventurous [after using CBD]…There is also sometimes an increased sensitivity to touch and increased willingness to be more engaged and sensual which, in turn, enhances sexual pleasure and deepens orgasmic abilities.”

Men experiencing issues with erectile dysfunction may also benefit from using CBD, according to Evan Goldstein, an expert in sexual health and wellness and founder of Bespoke Surgical, a surgical practice for men based in New York and Los Angeles.

Dr Goldstein advises many of his LGBTQ+ clients to experiment with CBD

“CBD increases blood flow and nerve sensation, which can help enhance sexual pleasure and intensify orgasms for all parties,” Goldstein said, adding that he also advises many of his LGBTQ+ clients to experiment with CBD if they’re experiencing issues in the bedroom.

There’s definitely something to get excited about with these findings which suggest that we have found yet another use for CBD, and one which might lead to a lot more fun and happiness in the bedroom!
