You have to cast your mind way back to 1998 to remember the shock and controversy that followed the announcement that The Body Shop was introducing a line of what are now iconic products, made with hemp seed oil.
Today, it’s hard to understand what the fuss was all about, but fuss there was as the French police seized the products claiming they encouraged drug use and Health Canada threatened to raid the warehouses the products were being stored in.
My, how times have changed, and we can only sit back and admire the pluck of the founder, the late Dame Anita Roddick who stuck to her guns and kept the products on the shelves.
It was certainly the right decision as today, The Body Shop sells one of its cult Hemp Hand Protector moisturisers every 9 seconds, globally.
Now, it almost feels like the brand that championed sustainability and the use of natural ingredients in beauty way before everyone else jumped on the bandwagon, has come full circle as it celebrates the launch of a long-overdue line of CBD skincare products.
Designed to work as a three-stage facial regime, the vegan-friendly CBD collection has been developed to soothe stressed skin which The Body Shop categorises as being dry, dehydrated and lacking in luminosity.
Unsurprisingly, alongside the CBD is Hemp Seed which is well known for being rich in omega fatty acids that help restore the skin’s moisture levels.
Adding to the mix of skin-soothing ingredients are squalene to hydrate and patchouli to calm and heal the skin and all are branded in a tasteful, calming green to ensure standout from their other product lines.
Always known for its affordable but effective products, The Body Shop has made sure that the CBD range is no different with prices ranging from £17 to £25.
The CBD Soothing Oil-Balm Cleansing Mask
Having already bought and tested the range, this mask is innovation in a tube. It starts off as a balm before quickly turning to oil which makes it easy to massage into the skin and finally, it turns into a milk texture ready to be rinsed off.
The blend of CBD and hemp seed oil is enhanced by the addition of hydrating olive oil and purifying white clay which really did leave my skin squeaky clean but not dry. It can be used as a daily wash-off treatment but I also find it works wonders as a mask too.
The CBD Restoring Facial Oil
More of a dry than an oily oil, this is a blend of CBD and hemp seed oils infused with extract of patchouli. The oil helps to soothe signs of dullness as well as replenish moisture levels. To use, just dab in small spots rather than massage onto the skin post-cleansing, in the morning and evening.
The CBD Replenishing Moisture Cream
Like the oil, the rich but fast-absorbing day cream contains CBD and hemp seed oil, squalane and patchouli extract and is designed to help restore your skin’s moisture levels and give it a healthy glow.
Use the cream after you’ve applied the oil and warm between your fingers for a few seconds until it becomes translucent, then press gently into your skin.
This is a great range from The Body Shop and the products are not only affordable, but they also work. Our only niggle is that we would have liked to have seen The Body Shop include more information about the CBD itself such as where it comes from, what kind it is and how much is included in each of the products.
That said, if you’re looking for a CBD skincare line from a brand you can trust, this is the one for you.
