If you’ve been thinking about adding CBD oil products to your beauty regime, now might be the time to do so with the ever-increasing choice of CBD skincare available in shops and online.
The active ingredients in cannabis – including CBD, THC, and various lesser-known compounds – are what scientists call cannabinoids which work through a set of receptors in your nervous system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) which helps to maintain balance in our body.
The ECS links with skincare through these receptors as they’re found all over the body including beneath our skin and help to manage the response to inflammation and oxidative stress which can cause a variety of skin conditions.
By adding CBD oil, which is well known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, to skincare will enable it to interact with the receptors to help us manage conditions such as acne and ageing.
It can do this because molecules in CBD are also easily absorbed by the skin’s layers as they can recognise and adapt to the CBD when it’s applied topically.
An acne soother
Although various factors can trigger acne including excess sebum production, hormonal imbalances and genetics, what is known is that it’s an inflammatory skin condition so any product that helps to soothe the inflammation is a benefit.
Whilst more long-term research is required, early research does show that CBD oil applied topically can help to soothe the skin and regulate oil production and inflammation in sebocytes – the skin cells responsible for oil production.
If CBD works on both excess oil production and inflammation you can see the potential as a powerful treatment for those with severe acne who don’t want to pop pills or use overly strong topical treatments, so don’t be surprised if we start to see the appearance of more CBD products targeting breakouts and acne-related redness.
An anti-ageing solution
Free radicals cause oxidative stress to the skin as they damage cell membranes, proteins and DNA, which in turn causes premature ageing such as wrinkles and a lack of firmness in the skin.
As if that’s not enough, our skin also has to contend with environmental stressors like cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes and even the sun.
That’s where anti-oxidants come in as they work to neutralise free radicals by reducing their numbers and preventing oxidation and attacks on collagen.
Anti-oxidants in skincare is nothing new and we’re already familiar with ones such as the omega oils – 3,6 and 9 which help skin regain firmness by slowing the deterioration process whilst also helping it appear smoother.
Amongst others, there is Vitamin C which brightens and revitalises a dull complexion and Vitamin E which helps to protect and defend the skin from UV light exposure which is why it’s often found in sunscreens.
However, research has already shown that CBD acts as a very powerful anti-oxidant and amazingly, it exhibits 30-50% more antioxidant activity than both Vitamins E and C.
It helps to reverse the signs of ageing by slowing down the loss of collagen and helping the sebaceous gland secrete oil, thus helping to combat dry skin and improve the overall appearance of the skin.
A clinical study by Avon scientists from 2020, has also discovered that CBD can also boost levels of certain Heat Shock Proteins (HSPs) in skin cells, suggesting that CBD infused skincare can work as an effective anti-ageing ingredient.
Heat Shock Proteins are a type of molecular chaperone that protects the skin from stress which can lead to ageing and people with higher levels of HSPs tend to have fewer signs of ageing such as wrinkles.
As we can see, CBD obviously has powerful anti-oxidant properties – so powerful in fact, that in 2003, the US Government was awarded a patent for the use of ‘Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants’.
Of course, that patent wasn’t just for skincare but as we’re slowly discovering, CBD has the potential to help treat a host of health conditions, something the US Government would appear to be as interested in as the rest of us…
An industry on the rise
With the Global CBD skincare market projected to reach $3.48 billion by 2026, this is an industry that is here to stay as more brands will rush to develop and launch products.
Just remember that to ensure that you don’t buy products that have Hemp Seed Oil or Cannabis Sativa Oil as they are not the same as CBD.
There’s nothing wrong with either of these oils as they’re both incredibly beneficial to your skin but they are different as CBD oil is rich in the Cannabidiol compound. For now, there’s no need to worry about that as we’ve already selected some of the best products for you!
